Sringeri is situated in the Sahyadri hills region of Karnataka. Access to Sringeri is mainly by road. A railway line from Bangalore city to Sringeri via Mudigere is currently being planned. Meanwhile, the closest railway stations are at Shimoga and Birur, both of which are about 96 kilometers away. Mangalore, on the Arabian Sea, is 107 kilometers away, while Bangalore, the state capital, is about 320 kilometers distant. The map above shows major train and road routes leading to Sringeri, with distances marked in kilometers.

Karnataka state transport buses ply from most towns and cities in Karnataka to Sringeri on a regular basis. Thus, there are bus services to Sringeri from Bangalore, Mangalore, Udipi, Shimoga and other southern Karnataka towns. Taxi services are also available from these cities, although this would be more expensive. Another option is to drive to Sringeri in your own vehicle or in a rented car. The roads leading to Sringeri go through lush green plantations and dense forests through narrow mountain passes as in Agumbe. The travel can be arduous, but the wealth of scenic beauty on the way makes one forget the difficulty of the roads. There are also regular tours to Sringeri, organized by the Karnataka Tourism department.

His Holiness, Swami Bharati Tirtha, the Sankaracharya of Sringeri, keeps travelling all over India, but mainly in the south. If your purpose of visiting Sringeri is to have personal darshan of the Sankaracharya, you may want to write in advance to the Administrator of the matha, and arrange your travel plans to coincide with a time when Swamiji is at Sringeri. The postal address is:

Sri V. R. Gowrishankar
The Administrator
Sri Sringeri Matham
Dakshinamnaya Sri Sringeri Sarada Peetham
Sringeri, Karnataka 577 139
INDIA

Letters may also be addressed to His Holiness directly, or to his private secretary, at the same address. When not on an extended tour, the Sankaracharya is most likely to be at Sringeri during the time of the Sarada Navaratri festival, and during the annual Chaturmasya period in the monsoon season. The temples at Sringeri are open throughout the year, and even when the Acharya is away on a tour, priests conduct the regular pujas at all the temples in Sringeri.

There are a few guest houses being run by the Sringeri matha, where pilgrims and other visitors can stay. The rates are nominal, and the matha also provides free food everyday. In addition, the Sringeri village has many other inns and restaurants managed by private entrepreneurs. The local residents are very hospitable, and willingly accommodate visitors in their homes, if necessary.
