The research is supported by National Science Foundation career grant, IIS-9733730. Our research group will investigate integration of multimedia technology with
database systems for supporting sophiscated multimedia presentations. Such
presentations can be constructed from various database resources and contain
various aspects of multimedia characteristics. Because of the complexity and
flexibility of such applications, the existing work in multimedia research cannot
be directly applied to such environment. To support such applications, both
multimedia and database technology must be integrated together to provide
capabilities of retrieval, transmission, and presentation of multimedia data.
The research group will focus on formulating the principles for ensuring
consistant multimedia presentations and designing robust techniques to
retrieve and transmit multimedia database to users. Specifically, we will:
- develop a framework for ensuring consistent presentation of
multimedia data based on quality-of-service(Qos) requirements;
- develop adaptive end-to-end control approaches to supporting
transmission of multimediadata over networks;
- formulate a resourse allocation model for the database to
allocate resources for data retrieval;
- implement and experiment with a distributed multimedia database
protype for supporting educational digital library.
