Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required. We strongly prefer letters from faculty who are familiar with your academic interests, achievements, and abilities. We will also accept letters from professional sources, but prefer letters from professors.
The cover sheet for your 3 letters is available here:

Transcripts
Original or properly certified transcripts or mark-sheets from your undergraduate and graduate institutions attended are required. If you graduated and your degree conferral is not listed on your transcripts, provide proof of degree. All foreign transcripts must include certified translations.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
The general test is required. The subject test is not required, but recommended. Information and arrangements to take the exam can be made by contacting the Educational Testing Service at www.ets.org.
We do not require a minimum total score for this test. Our average score is approximately 1300/1600 (if taken after October 2002) or 2020 (if taken prior to October 2002).
Please send your results to us by using the following codes:
- institution code 2925
- department code 0402
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Foreign applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to take this exam. The exam results must be dated within 2 years from your proposed date of admission and remain valid upon entering the term you applied for. For example, Fall 2007 begins in August 2007; therefore, your exam results must be valid until August 2007.
Original TOEFL scores must be provided in order to obtain an I-20. Information and arrangements to take the exam can be made by contacting the Educational Testing Service at www.ets.org.
Foreign applications will not be considered for admission without the TOEFL score results. It is strongly recommended to make test arrangements early in the year so sufficient time can be allowed for the results to be reported before our application deadline.
The State University of New York at Buffalo has a minimum score requirement of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based).
Please send your results to us by using the following codes:
- institution code 2925
- department code 78
Financial Statement
Foreign applicants must submit a completed financial form and include your original bank statement on the financial institution’s letterhead. An I-20 cannot be processed without this statement documenting sufficient funds for each year of intended study (2 years for master’s and 5 years for doctoral).
Print your International Applicant Financial Form here.
Financial Funding
If you are interested in financial aid in the form of a teaching assistantship, please answer the “Financial Aid/Financial Support” section in the application form. There is not a separate application form to submit for any assistantships within our department. The Graduate Affairs Committee determines the award decisions based upon your completed application packet.
