CSE 111 - Fall 2002

Lab #4

Background

You have done quite a few basic tasks with Microsoft Word, now let's get creative and explore some of the more desktop-publishing like features of the software.

The TA will begin lab by introducing some of the ideas that you will need to complete the lab.  Ask the TA if you have any questions about the contents of the lab, or if you are unsure how to accomplish a specific task.

Creating a Folder for Lab 4

Please refer back to the directions in Lab 1 if you don't remember how to create a folder. Create a folder in CSE111 entitled Lab4 that you will save all your Lab 4 work in.

Creating a Brochure

You will create a word document that contains a brochure that advertises the subject of your choice.  You can make a brochure that describes your major, an academic department, a particular course, your favorite store in the mall, your dream vacation - the choice is yours.  The content of the brochure does not have to be realistic, but it should make sense.  The brochure should be created with landscape paper orientation in three columns.  You will create two pages of brochure so if you were to tri-fold your paper, there would be printing on all parts.

While this is not a class on creative art/expression/artistic ability, you should make the brochure somewhat aesthetically pleasing.  You should also include somewhere in the brochure who the creator was and your recitation section, so that we can grade your submission.

Aside from the text for the description of the place in your brochure, it should include the following elements.  If you do not remember how to do any of the following, refer to your lecture notes, or seek out assistance from your instructor or teaching assistant during office hours.  Note that the requirements for the document must be followed exactly.  You will not receive full credit for the lab if there are any portions missing.

  1. There should be at list one image (photo or clipart) that has text wrapped around it.

  2. At least one use of WordArt.

  3. At least one Drop Cap letter.

  4. A diagram from the Insert -> Diagram menu.

  5. A Table of at least 3 rows and 2 columns containing information relating to the topic of your brochure.

  6. A picture that has been drawn with the Drawing Tools described in Project 3 of the Word Book.  You picture should contain at least 3 different shapes that have color and there should be text inserted into or near one of the shapes.

  7. You should insert a comment to point out to the grader each of the above points.  The comment should contain an indication of which element of the above six it is.  Therefore, you should have six comments inserted into your document.

What should I hand in and when is this due?

You should save your document to your Lab4 folder.  However, for this lab, we would like you to print out your brochure, fold it like a brochure and hand it in to your TA, at the beginning of your recitation next week.  You should print out a version of your brochure that shows your comments.  You do not have to print out a color version of your brochure if you do not have access to a color printer, just make sure it prints in grayscale.

The fact that the print out is due at the beginning of recitation means just that - walk into recitation with a print out of the brochure and hand it to the TA.  This does not mean go to recitation to print out the assignment to hand to the TA.  If you brochure is not in the TAs hands when it is asked for, it will be considered late.

Refer to the list of due dates below for your recitation.
