[2013-FEB-15] Working outside CSE labs

You can use the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC), which let's you log in remotely to the CSE systems, as if you were sitting in a CSE SunRay lab. First visit:

https://wiki.cse.buffalo.edu/services/

Log in using your UBIT username and password. Visit this page,

https://wiki.cse.buffalo.edu/services/content/oracle-virtual-desktop-client
or search for "Oracle Virtual Desktop Client".

Download the client. Run VPN if off campus, then run the OVDC. Set it up to connect to server dragonforce.cse.buffalo.edu; go to Settings->Network and set the MTU to 1406, for check both boxes in the "Compression" section.

Exit the settings, and click "connect". You should now get a log-in window just like on the SunRays in the lab.

[2013-FEB-15] VPN

To access various university and departmental services from off campus you need to run VPN. See UB Virtual Private Network (UBVPN) for more information.

[2013-FEB-14] Google Summer of Code

I received this notice in e-mail:

We're pleased to announce that Google Summer of Code will be happening for its ninth year this year. This innovative program for University and college students ages 18 and older offers accepted students a chance to learn open source software development skills while earning a stipend. Please check out the blog post [1] about the program and read the FAQs [2] and Timeline [3] on Melange for more information.

The GSoC calendar, FAQ, and events timeline have all been updated with this year's important dates, so please refer to those for the milestones for this year's program. NB: the normal timeline for the program has been modified for this year. You'll probably want to examine the dates closely to make sure you know when important things are happening.

Pat will be discussing why you should be using Git (if you aren't doing so already), and he will be giving a detailed introduction on how to use the powerful version control system.

Bring your laptops because this will be a hands-on talk!

[2013-Feb-06] Buffalo Start-up Weekend (March 1-3)

From the organizers:

Buffalo Startup Weekend is a weekend dive into starting a business. Anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers on Friday night. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it's a 54-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekend culminates with presentations on Sunday evening in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback. Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups! If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur, get ready for the best weekend of your life!

For more information see StartUpWeekend-2013-50.pdf.

[2013-JAN-18] Code repository updates

I have added the code from today's lecture (tests for and solution to counting of vowels) to the lecture code repository. I have also added the practice problems for HW1. Note that the project does have compilation errors when you check it out from the repository - because you still need to write the implementation code.

[2013-JAN-16] Code repository

All code from lecture is contributed to the following CVS repository:
HOST: timberlake.cse.buffalo.edu
REPOSITORY PATH: /projects/CSE116/Repositories/Spring2013/Student
CONNECTION TYPE: extssh
