The University at Buffalo is wired. So is Geneseo State College.

In fact, the two Western New York institutions -- which have made information technology on campus a major thrust in recent years -- are among the "100 Most Wired Colleges in the U.S.," according to Yahoo! Internet Life. The magazine's May issue ranks UB 47th on its third annual list of the most technologically advanced colleges. Geneseo State is 49th.

The only other State University of New York campus, the Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, is No. 95. Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland is No. 1.

Yahoo!'s survey, e-mailed to 571 colleges and universities, was conducted by Yahoo! Internet Life in partnership with Peterson's, a provider of education information.

"From not even being listed last year, UB has vaulted to the number 47 position this year," said an elated Joseph J. Tufariello, UB's senior vice provost for educational technology.

Sue Chichester, Geneseo State's director of computing and information technology, noted that the college was 90th on Yahoo!'s most-wired list a year ago.

"To be 49th this year is really exciting," she said. "We have worked hard at Geneseo at investing technology dollars wisely in order to build a technology infrastructure we are very proud of."

According to Tufariello, UB's new Center for Computational Research and its planned introduction of the Access99 program for students, probably contributed to UB's being on the "wired" list.

The magazine also noted that 75 percent of UB's dorms are wired; 50 percent of its public computers were purchased in the last two years; the availability of computers on campus is now 12.08 per 100 students, and the public computers are available 24 hours every day of the week.

Also cited were UB's availability of on-line registration, drop-add, course schedules, transcripts and distance learning.

"The inclusion of UB as the only SUNY university center on the list is recognition by the broader computing community of the enormous strides we are making in technology at this university," Tufariello said.

Geneseo State "greatly improved our on-line services for students through the GeneseoKnightWeb this year," Ms. Chichester noted.

KnightWeb lets student register for courses on-line; print unofficial transcripts, check on course schedules and view their college bill and financial aid information.

"We have more than 50 computing labs that are accessible to students -- which means a 1 to 7 computer-to-student ratio, and almost 50 percent of these computers are less than two years old," Ms. Chichester said.

"We also provide port-per-pillow full campus network and Internet access to our on-campus residents," she added. (Port-per-pillow means that a network jack is available to every on-campus student resident.)
