Investigator of a $2 million NSF ITR grant on `Enhancing Crystal Structure
Determination through Data Mining, Collaborative Environments, and Grid Computing'.
This project includes investigators from Computer Science and Engineering,
Media Study, and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. The molecular
structure determination package SnB is proposed as the testbed for creating
a transparent, community-based, collaborative, learning system.

Chomicki, Associate Professor, gave an invited talk on "Data Models
and Query Languages for Spatiotemporal Databases," at the workshop on Complex
Reasoning on Geographical Data, associated with the 2001 International
Conference on Logic Programming, Paphos, Cyprus. He also gave a talk on
"Consistent Query Answers in Inconsistent Databases" in the Computer Science
Department, National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece.

with the hope of making information a bit easier to find. There are now two
main sites. The URL http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/
is tuned towards visitors not already in the Department. A new URL, http://www-local.cse.buffalo.edu/
has been added with extra content for people already affiliated with the
Department. Local users may want to set up the www-local URL as the Web page
your browser starts on.

In CSE 410/510 E-Commerce Technology
(taught by Sviatoslav Braynov) students
were assigned the task to design and develop 3 E-Government projects using
Java 2 Enterprise Edition. The projects were approved and are expected to
be implemented by the Town of Amherst. The projects include: an auction site
for governmental procurement, a site for recreation department reservations,
and a site for dog registration.

Rohini Srihari, Associate
Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and Linda Swiniuch, Associate
Professor Emeritus of Theatre and Dance and founder of the Zodiaque Dance
Company, were recognized as Women of Accomplishment by the Women's Pavilion
Pan Am 2001. These women were recognized as those "who have touched Western
New York with their genius, dedication and humanity, and left a lasting legacy
for the generations to come."

C. Shapiro, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, spent
three weeks in Japan as an Invitational Fellow of the Japan Society for
the Promotion of Science. Prof. Shapiro visited a number of research laboratories
in Tokyo, Sapporo, Nara, and Kyoto, and gave lectures at Tokyo University,
The National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo University of Agriculture and
Technology, Hokkaido University, Nara Advanced Institute of Science &
Technology, The Communication Research Laboratory, and Tokyo Institute
of Technology.
