Ajay Shekhawat: Pictures from May 4, 2003 (2 pictures)

Pittsburgh, PA from Mt. Washington. The red trolley in the foreground is the Duquesne Incline. The city of Pittsburgh and Buffalo share a lot in terms of the past; unlike Buffalo, Pittsburgh managed to shed its blue-collar bonds (steel mills, manufacturing) and reinvent itself quite a bit (note the red Freemarkets skyscraper). My guess: it's the 2 universities, U Pitt and CMU. They've spun off a whole slew of companies (Lycos, Fore Systems, Freemarkets, Transarc, to name a few). Buffalo, on the other hand, has yet to have a single high-tech spin-off with more than 100 employees. sigh. Heck, we missed out even on the 'dot.com' boom (when anyone with the silliest idea could get VC funding).
Another view of downtown Pittsburgh, PA from Mt. Washington.
