Ajay Shekhawat: Pictures from November 7, 2003 (20 pictures)

Sunrise in the Grand Canyon. What a place. If you don't believe in a God, you must come here. Just the sheer grandeur of the place can convince anyone that there must be a God somewhere to have created this sight.
The sun rises on the Grand Canyon. I walked the rim trail, all the way over to 'Hermit's Rest'. I took nearly 80 pictures in the area, to satisfy the urge to soak up all the beauty. I wonder what would it be like to do a BASE jump there... I bet it would be awesome! ('cept for the climb back to the top, of course! :-) )
Another day rises on the Grand Canyon.
A display showing the main features visible from a spot. I've included it here just to show the distances involved. Think about this: the North Rim is about 14km from this spot. Imagine the amount of time it must've taken the Colorado river to carve out this Canyon.
A view of the Grand Canyon village, with its lodges, train station, etc.
The 'Orphan Mine'. A dumb idea (mining in the GC) that should never have been implemented. But, I guess the Cold War was on, and since Uranium was involved, all logic flew out the window. Thankfully, the mine's been shutdown for 30+ years now.
A view of the Colorado river. When the wind dies down, you can faintly hear the roar of the mighty Colorado.
Yet another view of the mighty Colorado. At one time, I could hear (very faintly) the outboard motor of some boat down there (or so I think...).
The shadows dance along the Canyon walls as the sun rises.
I happened to chance upon a 'condor rescue' in operation. As it turns out, a condor chick had flown out of its nest and needed to be rescued. What you see in the picture is a helicopter (see if you can spot it) down in the canyon below us. This pic was taken at full zoom. That should give you an idea of the depth of the Canyon.
An interesting rock formation along the way to Hermit's Rest.
Another step, another picture. Each step yields a view worthy of a snap. After some time, you feel like putting the camera away and just letting it all soak in...
Another shot of the mighty Colorado (this is looking east from the vantage point).
Yet another shot of the Colorado, looking west.
Finally, Hermit's Rest (which is named after a French-Canadian 'hermit' named Louis Boucher, who lived down in the Canyon many decades ago). This is the last stop on the 'red line' shuttle bus. From here you can take the shuttle bus back to the Grand Canyon village.
Near Yaki Point, a field of burnt trees. With all the red soil around, this field with its yellow and black trees looked quite surreal. (Unfortunately, I still had an enhancing filter on the camera, and the yellowness of the trees doesn't show through as well as I remember in my mind's eye).
A view of the Colorado, as it is coming into the Canyon, from Yaki Point.
Leaving Grand Canyon, heading up north (eventually) towards Zion National Park, along route 89A. This route will take me along the Vermilion Cliffs, a very scenic drive for the evening.
Approaching a bend on the road, towards the Navajo Bridge. As you can tell by the fact that I'm standing in the middle of the road taking pictures, the traffic was negligible. The sign says 'Lees Ferry Anglers'. Lee's Ferry is where many of the Colorado-rafting expeditions start.
View of the Colorado, from the Navajo Bridge (which is a national monument). A trip down the Colorado would be a fun thing to do (and has been listed on my 'things to do before I die' list...)
