Lab 1 – Using the Windows NT Environment

By the end of the first lab, you should understand how to log in/on and out/off from the lab computers and you should have done basic account set-up. You will hopefully have time to explore using Windows by doing some of the book exercises. Good Luck! J

Here are the files for the first lab: prerqsdd.exe

Note: Directions to click mean click the left mouse button, that is, depress then release the left mouse button, it should make a clicking noise. Double click means click the left mouse button twice in succession. Right click means click the right mouse button. Directions to select a menu choice mean: click on the menu name, move the mouse until the choice you want is highlighted, click on that highlighted choice. Pull down a menu means click on the word denoting that menu.

In the first part of the lab you and your lab partner will, in turn, perform steps to set up your accounts. Do not share your password with your lab partner or with anyone else.

Logging on – user name, password

If the computer you are sitting at is not turned on, turn it on. I you don’t see a login box press ctrl-alt-del. ("Control-Alt-Delete" – you need to press down these 3 keys on the keyboard simultaneously). This will bring up a login window on your screen. Your user name is the same as for your UB computer account, after you type it in move to the space next to Password either by clicking there or by pressing the tab key. Your initial password is your 8-digit student number without any hyphen (senior auditors who have not been given a password see your TA)

Once you have successfully logged on you will see the message of the day, click close to get rid of it. You will also probably see an Internet Explorer window – close this window by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the window. (You may have to wait to do this until the Office Toolbar appears on the right hand side of the desktop.)

Change your password now by putting the mouse pointer somewhere on the background of the desktop, not on an icon or toolbar. Press ctrl-alt-del. You will see a program manager window appear. Click the Change Password button and proceed as directed. To move between the text entry fields in a dialog box use the tab key or click in the desired field.

Windows Set Up – Office Toolbar, taskbar, start button, icons, wallpaper

Your desktop will have some icons on it (pictures), the Office Toolbar on the right, and the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. The background is called the wallpaper.

Right click the office toolbar anywhere not on a button. A menu will appear. Select Customize to bring up the Customize dialog box (place for you to interact with the computer in a "dialog"). Click on the Settings tab. Make sure User Templates location is highlighted, if it isn’t, click on it. Click the Modify button. Click to the right of the text inside the white rectangle next to where it says Folder Name, backspace to erase what is currently there, when the original text is deleted, type Z:\Templates. Click Add in that dialog box, the click OK in the remaining dialog box.

Now you will do some set up for Internet Explorer (IE). Double click on the IE icon.

You will be in a set up program. In general, click the Next button in a dialog box to proceed. In the box that asks about Internet connections, make sure that the radio button next to the choice that says you already have an Internet connection is clicked. A radio button is clicked if it has a black dot next to it. To put a dot there, click your mouse in the white circle next to the choice. When you get to the box that says Finish, click that. You will now be able to user IE as a web browser.

Move the mouse slowly along the buttons on the Office Toolbar. If you pause on a button, you should see text appear that explains what choice that button stands for. Click the New Office Document button. Double click the icon above the words Blank Document. This will start up MS Word. Click Tools, select Options, and click the File Locations tab. Click the word Documents, click the Modify button. Change the text inside the white rectangle next to Folder Name to Z:\ (see instructions in preceding paragraph). Click OK in that box, and OK in the remaining box on your screen. Click File and select Exit to get out of MS Word.

Now log out and let your lab partner log in and perform all of these steps. It is very important that you properly log out of the system whenever you are finished working. To log out, click on Start, select Shut Down, click the radio button next to Close all programs and log on as a different user, click the Yes button.

Once you both have performed account set up, you may do the rest of the lab in either person’s account. Make sure to take turns doing the tasks so that both of you understand how to navigate around the Windows environment.

Make sure you have read the Prerequisites: Essentials of Windows 95 chapter in your blue book (Grauer and Barber) and that you have the book with you. Page references given below refer to this chapter. Note that the discussions in the orange boxes give you additional information, you need not perform any of the suggested tasks in the orange boxes but you should read them. Get as much done as possible in lab, you are encouraged to come back so that you can try out everything if you don’t have time to do that today.

Hands-On Exercise 1 (pp. 13-20). Skip Steps 7 and 8. Note that the lab computers have a drive Z, which is a networked drive.

Hands-On Exercise 2 (pp. 24-29). These directions are a little different than the book. Start IE by double clicking on its icon. Go to File and select Open. Type this address:

http://www.prenhall.com/grauer/html/data4.html

Scroll down to the bottom of the page (you can use the down arrow key) until you see Windows Prerequisites on the left side of the table. Click on the text to the right of this to get the files you need. You will see a web page that says FTP directory. Double click on the blue, underlined text that says prerqsdd.exe. In the window that appears, make sure the Save it to Disk option button is clicked. Continue by following the directions in STEP 2 in the book, beginning right after you see Save it to Disk in the second paragraph. Note that where the book refers to the Prerequisites icon yours will be called prerqsdd. When the Unzip to Folder text box appears, delete the a:\ you see in the box and type z:\. You do not need a floppy disk right now. For the rest of this exercise substitute drive Z whenever the book says drive A.

Hands-On Exercise 3 (pp. 33-39). In Step 4, your network drive is Z. Use the lab’s floppy disk, making sure to format it before you copy any files onto it. You will not have an Exploring Prerequisites folder, when you select the Z: drive you should directly see the files coped from the web page displayed. In Step 6 do not print the file!! In the paint program the view menu is where you can select to display the text toolbar, meaning there is a check next to it. If there is no check, click it. This toolbar allows you to change the text size, font, and style.

Hands-On Exercise 4 (pp. 41-48). Everywhere it says to use drive C, you should use drive Z. In Step 6, your recycle bin will be on the desktop; don’t do Step 8.

Before you leave make sure to remove the floppy disk from drive A and leave it next to your computer.

Fill out the Lab 1 Questionnaire if you need a hard copy and have trouble printing it from the web pick one up in the lab. It is due in lab NEXT WEEK. For people in Monday labs it is due Monday, September 28th.
