CS 101 Lab 8 – Microsoft Access I

Do the following exercises in the Microsoft Access section of the Grauer Book. Before you begin, read the Notes section of this lab handout for important information about differences between the book exercises and what you will do in the lab.

Chapter 1 (Introduction to Microsoft Access) Hands-on exercises 1, 2

Chapter 2 (Tables and Forms): Hands-on exercises 1; Exercise 2 page 81

Chapter 3 (Information from the Database) Hands-on exercise 2

Note that it may help to work with a partner for these exercises. Read the comments written here before you start – they will help with understanding the book and troubleshooting the lab material.

Due the week of November 30th in lab

To hand in:

Create a cover page using Microsoft Word containing the following information:

Staple the cover page to all the printouts from the exercises in the order listed below. If you work with a partner make sure to print a copy of each exercise for both of you. Note that some of the exercises do not explicitly ask you to print, use this list as a guide of what you should print

If you are working in the lab, copy these files from Z:\burhans\Exploring Access. If you are working at home or elsewhere, you may want to bring a floppy disk to the lab and copy these files onto the disk. Otherwise, you can ftp the entire practice file folder, but it is 350KB in size. If you don’t know how to copy something from Z:\burhans, see lab 6. Instructions for ftp-ing a .exe file are included as part of lab 1.

Notes:

Chapter 1 (Introduction to Microsoft Access) Hands-on exercise 2

Typo page 18 (4th bullet point says Office 95, should be Office 97)

Replace in Field box that pops up will have last value searched for (i.e. not Prentice Hall until you change it)

Chapter 2 (Tables and Forms): Hands-on exercise 1

Page 45 select Design View, not Table Wizard in Step 2!!

Ignore instructions about the Table Wizard, go right to page 47 Step 5

Enter field names and data types to duplicate what you see in Figure 2.3

When all fields are entered, click in the row for the StudentID field, select Edit and Primary Key

Save the table

In Step 7, do not click the Build Button, instead type the Input Mask directly. For SSN, type 000-00-0000; for BirthDate (1) set the Data Type to Text; (2) set the Input Mask to 00-00-00

Pages 51-52 make up data you can not see in the picture

Chapter 2 Exercise 2 page 81

Use the Our Students Database for this exercise since you have not done the prior exercise
