Summary

In many database applications today, the data is annotated with a variety of metadata. Such metadata annotations are supposed to reflect data certainty, quality, consistency, provenance, confidentiality etc. We will study how different classes of annotations affect data and query semantics, and query evaluation. We will review recent research in probabilistic, incomplete and inconsistent databases, and in databases with provenance or lineage. We will also look at newly identified classes of queries and applications. The seminar will cover theoretical foundations, and current systems and applications. We will read papers from current database conferences and journals. A solid background in databases and some knowledge of logic are required. Each participant will have to prepare a class presentation. Attendance and class participation are mandatory.
