Summary

The seminar will focus on new research problems and results in data models, query languages, and foundations of databases. Topics to be discussed include but are not limited to:

preference queries and ranking
provenance
uncertain databases
dataspaces
data integration
conditional dependencies and data cleaning
foundations of the Semantic Web
privacy and security
stream and sensor databases.

Each student will give a class presentation based on one or more current research papers, and prepare a report based on the class discussion. There will also be presentations by the instructor and/or invited speakers.

A solid background in database management systems and some knowledge of logic are required. The seminar is graded S/U and can be taken for 1-3 credits. The requirements are independent of the number of credits.
