CSE 111, Fall 2004

Homework #1

Using the Public-Site Computers, the Web, and Listserv

Last Update: 31 August 2004

Note: NEW or UPDATED material is highlighted

For this HW, you will need:

  1. Log onto one of UB's PCs running Windows (e.g., the ones in the Capen 201A or Park 143 labs, or at any of the Cybraries, etc.).

Note: If you prefer, you can use your own computer instead of the public-site computers, but you really should make sure that you know how to use those, too.

  2. Get on the World-Wide Web in your favorite way (e.g., via Netscape or Internet Explorer):

    1. Find the "Academic Integrity: Policies and Procedures" and "Obstruction or Disruption in the Classroom--Policies" pages on the WWW (see the CSE 111 syllabus for direct links to them).

      • Note that the first is an HTML page that will open directly in your Web browser, but that the second is an Acrobat PDF file that requires Acrobat Reader to be on your machine. Acrobat Reader is on all public-site computers and is available on your TechTools disk. If you have trouble using it, see your TA or someone at the CIT Help Desk.

    2. Print them out and read them.

  3. If you are registered for this course, you will (eventually) be on the email listserv (i.e., email mailing list) for the course.

    1. I will send several copies of a welcoming message to the listserv.

    2. If you do not receive it, do the following 2 things:

      1. Join the list by following the instructions on the Listserv Information webpage.

      2. Email me (rapaport@cse.buffalo.edu) to let me know that you've joined the Listserv.

        • I will then send out another copy of the message, which you should receive.

        • If you still don't receive the message, then:

          1. Find the message on the class's Email archive

          2. Let me know that there's still a problem.

Note: If you did receive the message, then you can ignore this instruction, of course :-)

  4. When you have received and read it, then:

    1. Email your TA (find your TA's name and email address on the syllabus) with a description of its contents.

      • Do not copy the entire welcoming listserv email message into your email to your TA!

    2. Print it out.

  • Be sure to log out of Windows!

Turn in the following items, stapled together in the top left-hand corner:

    1. A cover page (which can be computer-generated or hand-printed) titled "HW #1", with:

      • Your full name (please print)
      • The date your assignment is due
      • Your lab section (L1...L6)
        • If you don't know your lab section, look it up on the syllabus!

    2. The first printed page of the "Academic Integrity" website.
      • Note: You may have to print out the first few pages, but just turn in the first full page that proves that you have found the right website.

    3. The first printed page of the "Obstruction...Policies" website.
    4. The HW #1 Welcoming Message to the listserv.
DUE: AT THE START OF LECTURE: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
