CALL FIRST TO MAKE SURE I'LL BE IN MY OFFICE (see phone & office # below). IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO MAIL YOUR EXAM TO YOU, PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR POSTAL ADDRESS. ======================================================================== Some statistics: Final exam: range of points = 52 to 184 (out of 192) range of letters = D to A averages = 122 = C/C+ Course: range = D to A average = B- The only students who received "F" grades were those who did not take one or both of the exams. Here is the algorithm for computing the final grade: 1. A recitation grade (REC) was computed as follows: a) There were 10 graded HWs (1..5,7..11) & 2 recitation-section quizzes. I promised to drop the lowest HW grade and to have quiz scores replace low HW grades. Therefore, a "HW" grade was computed as follows: HW := i) drop lowest HW grade ii) take the top 9 of the remaining 11 grades iii) average those top 9 grades b) There were 12 recitations meetings; an attendance grade (ATT) was computed as follows: if student was present for >= 10 recitations (i.e., had <= 2 **un**excused absences) then A elsif student was present for between 6 & 9 recits (i.e., had between 3 & 5 UNexcused absences) then C else F; c) REC := 0.75*HW + 0.25*ATT 2. The final course grade (G) was computed as follows: if FinalExamGrade > MidTermExamGrade, then G = 0.5*REC + 0.5*FinalExamGrade else G = 0.5*REC + 0.2*MidTermExamGrade + 0.3*FinalExamGrade > > ======================================================================== > > When converting between numbers and letters, use these conversions: > > > > A 4.00 > > A- 3.67 > > B+ 3.33 > > B 3.00 > > B- 2.67 > > C+ 2.33 > > C 2.00 > > C- 1.67 > > D+ 1.33 > > D 1.00 > > F 0.00 > > > > Then you can convert back from decimals to letters as follows: > > > > 3.86-4.0 A > > 3.51-3.85 A- > > 3.16-3.50 B+ > > 2.86-3.15 B > > 2.51-2.85 B- > > 2.16-2.50 C+ > > 1.86-2.15 C > > 1.51-1.85 C- > > 1.16-1.50 D+ > > 0.51-1.15 D > > 0 -0.50 F ------------------------------------------------------------------------ William J.
