POLICY To: CSE191-SP08-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: 191: LATE H.W. POLICY ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I apologize to those students who tried unsuccessfully to turn in late HWs this morning. Let me repeat the HW policy as stated on the syllabus at: http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/~rapaport/191/S08/syl.html#att ======================================================================== HWs will be collected at the start of lecture on the due date. If you try to hand yours in after they have been collected (e.g., at the end of lecture, in my mailbox, in the TA's mailbox, etc.), it will not be accepted. To repeat: NO LATE HOMEWORKS WILL BE ACCEPTED The lowest HW grade will be dropped. You should assume that you will fail to turn in one HW (oversleep, get stuck in traffic, etc.)--that's the one that will be dropped. If you know now that you will regularly be late, see me to make alternative arrangements for turning in your work. ======================================================================== It is necessary to have such a strict policy because of the size of the class. It is disturbing to me and to other students to come up to the front while I am lecturing to hand in a late HW. And I cannot accept late HWs after class because I want to be able to discuss answers during the class if anyone has a question. Because I will drop the lowest HW grade, that will include a 0 for a late HW, so you are not being penalized for one late HW. Try to get to class on time at least on the days on which HWs are collected; get up a bit earlier if necessary. If you have family or transportation issues that can make you late occasionally, let me know, and I will make alternative arrangements with you. If you wish to know whether your answers were correct, even though your HW was not graded, you can find out in recitation, or by seeing your TA or me during office hours (or by appointment); we'll be happy to review any of your HWs with you. Finally, I will also make all of you the following offer: If your final grade in the course was a borderline grade that would have been higher if only I had graded your late HW, then let me know at the end of the semester, and I will grade it at that time. POLICY To: CSE191-SP08-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Re: 191: LATE H.W. POLICY ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I received a couple of comments about my late policy on HWs: | This is a fine policy except there needs to be exceptions like when a | group of students from south campus are late because of something they | could not control like the buses being late. It was not like I was late | by something like thirty minutes i was late at most by 8-10 minutes and | you had not even handed the HW to the TA yet so i don't understand why | it was so unacceptable for me to expect you to except my HW. I could | understand once the class was half over or done or anything later then | that but by just a few minutes is a little ridiculous. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | I know that its your policy regarding submission on HW's but sometimes | I feel you need to consider somethings. Due to the weather today the | campus buses were late. (I know you would say thats the | transportations office's problem). But being 5 minutes late in such a | weather I feel is considered for the "first time"; since we(students | who came from south campus and who don't have a car) no other option. | I know doing this once would alter your rules but considering the first | time with problems which could not be controlled, is something you | should think about. Next time I will keep in mind that coming from | South campus we should leave at least 1 hour before a class as such bad | weather would surely keep welcoming us. I hear you, but... I did announce in class on the first day (and if you were not in class on that day, you still had the responsibility of finding out what you missed from other students; that's spelled out on the syllabus) that the kind of exceptions to my policy that I had in mind were students coming from South Campus or other long distances. Such students should inform me, preferably in writing (e.g., email), so that I will make exceptions for you. However, in no case should students march up to the front of the lecture hall while I'm in the middle of lecturing; wait till after class, please. In any case, for now I will stick to the policy with respect to HW 2: Not having it count will not count against your HW average, and, if you are a borderline grade at the end, such that my counting HW 2 would *raise* your *final course grade*, then I will revisit that HW (and any others that are similarly not counted) at that time, i.e., at the end of the semester. That way, you won't be penalized, the class won't be disturbed, and the instructional staff won't have to deal with myriad late HWs throughout the semester. Bottom line: On HW due dates, try to get to class early! ;-) From owner-cse191-sp08-list@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Sun Feb 10 15:08:50 2008 Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 15:08:36 -0500 From: "William J. Rather, **having a class on the South Campus that ends just before ours begins** is a legitimate excuse :-)
