Given people's propensity to "speak idiomatically unless there is a good reason not to do so" (Searle 1975), explaining how these expressions are mentally represented, recognised in their standard form, and syntactically processed is a central issue for any theory of language use. In the talk, alternative models of how idioms are recognized and of how speakers deal with their syntax will be discussed, and a model of their recognition and processing will be proposed.
