In your "How | to write" web site you say to include last name year and page number for | direct citations (e.g., (Rapaport 1987: 397)). The project specifications on | the syllabus don't say which format to use. Albert used the format (Rapaport | 1987) in his CSE 663 project report on 'harbinger'. In most of the CS | conference papers I've read they use the format [3] which refers to the | references section. I'm going to assume you want the first option listed | above (the one in your "How to write" web site) unless you reply saying | otherwise. Any citation format is generally OK, as long as you're consistent. I prefer the "Rapaport 1987" format when you're referring to a paper in general and "Rapaport 1987: 397" when quoting from p. 397. The problem with "[3]" is that you don't know what it is till you look in the reference list, and it's a bother to have to go back and forth. The name+year format is more informative. Having said that, I should add that if you have a firm page limitation, such as for a conference publication or a grant proposal, the numerical format saves a lot of space :-)
