Subject: Syllabus Update From: "William J. Rapaport" Date: Sun, 15 Nov 2009 14:12:47 -0500 I have updated the syllabus to reflect what we accomplished last week and what we will try to accomplish over the course of the rest of the semester: http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/~rapaport/719/syl.html#dates In particular, this coming Friday (Nov. 20), we will have: * Gezella's report on Chella & Manzotti 2007b (part 2) * Jensen's report on Buttazzo & Manzotti 2008 * Ray's report on Boltuc 2008 * Zeng's report on IJMC 1(2009) I would like to finish all of these on Friday, so that we can cover most of the "Tests of Consciousness" readings on the Friday after the Thanksgiving break (please start reading those papers now, if you have not already begun!). Consequently, Gezella's presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes, and the other 3 presenters next week should try to ensure that their presentations are no longer than about 40 minutes each. (This factors in time for breaks between presentations.) (Hint: If you practice your talk out loud to either a real or an imaginary audience, speaking in your normal speaking voice, and time yourself, then you'll have an idea of how long your presentation is and what you might need to cut in order to fit it in under the time limits. This is what you need to do in real life when you give a presentation at a conference, so it's good practice to do this now!) (You don't have to give a detailed presentation of every paper in your anthology; you can concentrate on a few detailed presentations of papers that you think are important or interesting, and be a bit more sketchy on the others.) -Bill Rapaport
