(1979), "Towards a Self-Extending Parser": I wonder how POLITICS is going to analyze the verbs that take particles, because mostly it is the particles that bring a new flavor into the meaning of the verb. I guess it cannot use particles stored in the memory separately from the specific verbs, because a paricle in combination with different verbs has a different meaning. Does it mean that the system has to have a knowledge where each verb is stored in combination with different particles? Not that it contradicts to the article's general methodology of knowledge representation but I would not agree with their example, where they claim that the words "Russia" and "the Soviet Union" have the same concept behind them. The Soviet Union presupposes the union of the soviet republics, whereas Russia is the name of one state that excludes all the republics. -Yana From owner-cse727-sp07-list@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Mon Feb 19 20:08:29 2007 Received: from ares.cse.buffalo.edu (ares.cse.Buffalo.EDU [128.205.32.79]) by castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.13.6/8.12.10) with ESMTP id l1K18T2p014499 for ; Mon, 19 Feb 2007 20:08:29 -0500 (EST) Received: from front3.acsu.buffalo.edu (upfront.acsu.buffalo.edu [128.205.4.140]) by ares.cse.buffalo.edu (8.13.6/8.13.6) with SMTP id l1K18Ofg036809 for ; Mon, 19 Feb 2007 20:08:24 -0500 (EST) Received: (qmail 27069 invoked from network); 20 Feb 2007 01:08:24 -0000 Received: from mailscan1.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.6.133) by front3.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 20 Feb 2007 01:08:24 -0000 Received: (qmail 28930 invoked from network); 20 Feb 2007 01:08:23 -0000 Received: from deliverance.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.57) by front1.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 20 Feb 2007 01:08:23 -0000 Received: (qmail 23003 invoked from network); 20 Feb 2007 01:08:18 -0000 Received: from listserv.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.35) by deliverance.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 20 Feb 2007 01:08:18 -0000 Received: by LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (LISTSERV-TCP/IP release 14.5) with spool id 3427334 for CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU; Mon, 19 Feb 2007 20:08:18 -0500 Delivered-To: CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Received: (qmail 24334 invoked from network); 20 Feb 2007 01:08:18 -0000 Received: from mailscan3.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.6.135) by listserv.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 20 Feb 2007 01:08:18 -0000 Received: (qmail 22900 invoked from network); 20 Feb 2007 01:08:17 -0000 Received: from castor.cse.buffalo.edu (128.205.32.14) by smtp2.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 20 Feb 2007 01:08:17 -0000 Received: from castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU (rapaport@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.13.6/8.12.10) with ESMTP id l1K18Hro014489 for ; Mon, 19 Feb 2007 20:08:17 -0500 (EST) Received: (from rapaport@localhost) by castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.13.6/8.12.9/Submit) id l1K18Hmo014488 for CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU; Mon, 19 Feb 2007 20:08:17 -0500 (EST) X-UB-Relay: (castor.cse.buffalo.edu) X-PM-EL-Spam-Prob: : 7% Message-ID: <200702200108.l1K18Hmo014488@castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU> Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2007 20:08:17 -0500 Reply-To: "William J. A good follow-up study could include the types of rule relaxations that are possible. Allowing any and every feature of our working definition to be relaxed or removed could lead to a very messy distinction of words. Perhaps a better computational solution would include these relaxed contraints as possible features of the word. In the sentence about using tariff as a barrier, "barrier" would be redefined as "either a physical or abstract thing which disenables the corresponding type of transfer. ~paul From owner-cse727-sp07-list@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Sun Apr 8 21:38:53 2007 Received: from ares.cse.buffalo.edu (ares.cse.Buffalo.EDU [128.205.32.79]) by castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.13.6/8.12.10) with ESMTP id l391crUo024473 for ; Sun, 8 Apr 2007 21:38:53 -0400 (EDT) Received: from front3.acsu.buffalo.edu (warmfront.acsu.buffalo.edu [128.205.6.88]) by ares.cse.buffalo.edu (8.13.6/8.13.6) with SMTP id l391cpD3006514 for ; Sun, 8 Apr 2007 21:38:51 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 23583 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 01:38:51 -0000 Received: from mailscan6.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.95) by front3.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 01:38:51 -0000 Received: (qmail 19354 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 01:38:51 -0000 Received: from deliverance.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.57) by front1.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 01:38:51 -0000 Received: (qmail 21659 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 01:38:49 -0000 Received: from listserv.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.35) by deliverance.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 01:38:49 -0000 Received: by LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (LISTSERV-TCP/IP release 14.5) with spool id 4465578 for CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU; Sun, 8 Apr 2007 21:38:48 -0400 Delivered-To: cse727-sp07-list@listserv.buffalo.edu Received: (qmail 16373 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 01:38:48 -0000 Received: from mailscan3.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.6.135) by listserv.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 01:38:48 -0000 Received: (qmail 1462 invoked by uid 60001); 9 Apr 2007 01:38:48 -0000 X-Mailer: University at Buffalo WebMail Cyrusoft SilkyMail v1.1.11 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Originating-IP: 66.67.170.95 X-UB-Relay: (internal) X-PM-EL-Spam-Prob: : 7% Message-ID: <1176082727.46199927dd3ff@mail1.buffalo.edu> Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2007 21:38:47 -0400 Reply-To: jcwhite2@BUFFALO.EDU Sender: "CVA Seminar, Spring 2007" From: John C White Subject: CSE727: Responce to "Towards a Self Extending Parser" To: CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Precedence: list List-Help: , List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe: List-Owner: List-Archive: X-UB-Relay: (deliverance.acsu.buffalo.edu) X-DCC-Buffalo.EDU-Metrics: castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU 1335; Body=0 Fuz1=0 Fuz2=0 X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.5 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=3.1.7 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.7 (2006-10-05) on ares.cse.buffalo.edu X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.88.6/3050/Sun Apr 8 19:47:56 2007 on ares.cse.buffalo.edu X-Virus-Status: Clean Status: RO Content-Length: 498 Not so much an implementation as it is a methodology, this particular article brings up some interesting points involving metaphors. It is true that the conventional meanings/case frames/syntactic representations will not properly interpret metaphors. Given that metaphors are fairly common in our language this could be quite the obstacle to some systems. Still, I am not sure if such occurrences can be as simple to find as determining inconsistencies in typical word meanings. -John White From owner-cse727-sp07-list@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Mon Apr 9 08:38:10 2007 Received: from ares.cse.buffalo.edu (ares.cse.Buffalo.EDU [128.205.32.79]) by castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.13.6/8.12.10) with ESMTP id l39CcA1D000072 for ; Mon, 9 Apr 2007 08:38:10 -0400 (EDT) Received: from front2.acsu.buffalo.edu (upfront.acsu.buffalo.edu [128.205.4.140]) by ares.cse.buffalo.edu (8.13.6/8.13.6) with SMTP id l39Cc8U2061690 for ; Mon, 9 Apr 2007 08:38:08 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 17728 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 12:38:08 -0000 Received: from mailscan7.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.6.158) by front2.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 12:38:08 -0000 Received: (qmail 17686 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 12:38:07 -0000 Received: from defer.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.58) by front2.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 12:38:07 -0000 Received: (qmail 20761 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 12:37:59 -0000 Received: from listserv.buffalo.edu (128.205.7.35) by defer.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 12:37:59 -0000 Received: by LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (LISTSERV-TCP/IP release 14.5) with spool id 4459658 for CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU; Mon, 9 Apr 2007 08:37:59 -0400 Delivered-To: cse727-sp07-list@listserv.buffalo.edu Received: (qmail 11323 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 12:37:59 -0000 Received: from mailscan3.acsu.buffalo.edu (128.205.6.135) by listserv.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 12:37:59 -0000 Received: (qmail 3880 invoked from network); 9 Apr 2007 12:37:58 -0000 Received: from mta16.mail.adelphia.net (HELO mta16.adelphia.net) (68.168.78.211) by smtp3.acsu.buffalo.edu with SMTP; 9 Apr 2007 12:37:58 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] (really [68.168.90.36]) by mta16.adelphia.net (InterMail vM.6.01.05.04 201-2131-123-105-20051025) with ESMTP id <20070409123758.BLKQ260.mta16.adelphia.net@[127.0.0.1]> for ; Mon, 9 Apr 2007 08:37:58 -0400 User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 (Windows/20070221) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-UB-Relay: (mta16.mail.adelphia.net) X-PM-Spam-Prob: : 7% Message-ID: <461A33BD.2000806@cse.buffalo.edu> Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2007 08:38:21 -0400 Reply-To: Jeffrey Howell Sender: "CVA Seminar, Spring 2007" From: Jeffrey Howell Subject: CSE727: Carbonell 1979 To: CSE727-SP07-LIST@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU Precedence: list List-Help: , List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe: List-Owner: List-Archive: X-UB-Relay: (mta16.mail.adelphia.net) X-DCC-Buffalo.EDU-Metrics: castor.cse.Buffalo.EDU 1029; Body=0 Fuz1=0 Fuz2=0 X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.6 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=3.1.7 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.7 (2006-10-05) on ares.cse.buffalo.edu X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.88.6/3051/Mon Apr 9 07:51:27 2007 on ares.cse.buffalo.edu X-Virus-Status: Clean Status: RO Content-Length: 814 POLITICS is an interesting specific-use system, although it seems as though it would be more difficult than it would be worth to turn it into a general-purpose CVA system, considering its focus on intent. It's also difficult to get past the choice of example, which seems very simplistic. Maybe it needed to be that short to fit in the article without dominating it entirely, but the idea that the only goal Russia had at the time was to spread Communism... that just sticks out a bit more than it ought to. (Nevermind treating 'Russia' and 'USSR' as being equivalent... I suppose at the time the two were probably considered more or less the same to most of the western world.) No further comments on this one... apparently that example dominated my attention even more than I'd initially thought! What not as many people realized was that Russia was simply one part of the USSR, which also included the Ukraine, Belorus, and many, many other now-independent countries. I think most people see things more clearly now.
