"Bugs", by K.W. Regan, with apologies to "Stars", from /Les Miserables/ --------------------- ----------------------------- There, out in the darkness, There, out in the darkness, A program is running, A fugitive running, Fallen from grace, Fallen from grace, Gone off into space... Fallen from grace! There must be a bug; God be my witness, I never shall yield, I never shall yield, Till I can find the place, Till we come face to face, Till I can find the place! Till we come face to face! It knows its way in the code, He knows his way in the dark, But mine is the way of "-db" [But] mine is the way of the Lord, And those who can follow the path of And those who follow the path of the execution, don't program in C. righteous shall have their reward And if they crash as Windows can crash, And if they fall as Lucifer fell, the upgrade is free! the flame, the sword! Bugs, Stars, In your multitude, In your multitude[s], Scarce to be counted, Scarce to be counted, Filling the Internet Filling the darkness With a glitch at each node... With order and light; Why don't they use "sentinels", You are the sentinels, Silent and sure, Silent and sure, Keeping watch in the code, Keeping watch in the night, Keeping watch in the code! Keeping watch in the night! They know their place in the loops; You know your place in the sky; They hold their course and their aim; You hold your course and your aim; And each loop invariant returns and And each in your season returns and returns, and is always---the same; returns, and is always the same; And if they crash as Windows can crash, And if you fall as Lucifer fell, they crash in flame! you fall in flame! And so it has been, And so it has been, And so it is written, And so it is written, For our techno-society's eyes, On the doorway to Paradise, That when the clock strikes Jan 1, 2000, That those who falter and those who We'll pay the price! fall must pay the price! [music upswell...] [music upswell...] Lord let me find it, Lord, let me find him, Or if I can't find it, [So] that I may see him Sweep it under a rug! Safe behind bars! Oh! I will never rest--- [Oh!] I will never rest Till then, this I swear: till then! This I swear! I swear I'll find that...Bug! This I swear by the...Stars! Originally 1997, for our CSE305: Programming Languages course. My prior belief that the "Millennium Bug" would fizzle, plus dis-satisfaction with the line with "-db" (the Gnu debugger is gdb, or -ggdb in gcc) and the two lines after "keeping watch in the code!", kept me from publicizing this further. [Orig. "Stars" lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, music by Claude Michel Schonberg; http://www.allmusicals.com/lyrics/lesmiserables/stars.htm has what I take to be the official version, as all other Net lyrics sites I've seen agree with it.]
