Session I: Plenary Talk: "The Case for Weaker Network Security"

Speaker:
Joe Touch, University of Southern California / Information Sciences Institute

Network security solutions focus on strength and completeness, but have been difficult to effectively deploy because of their complexity and system impact. This talk presents our efforts to increase the ubiquity, feasibility, and efficiency of network security by exploring various weaker security mechanisms. This includes the IETF's recently concluded Better Than Nothing Security (BTNS) working group, which explored PKI-free security, ways to layer or factorize existing security mechanisms, and the development of fundamentally lightweight security. Our goal is to increase the effort required by attackers, to reduce the impact of deploying security and using it for active defense, and consequently to increase the widespread use of network security.

Joe Touch is the Postel Center Director in USC's Information Sciences Institute and a Research Associate Professor in USC's Computer Science and EE/Systems Departments. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and joined ISI in 1992, and his current projects involve virtual networks, optical Internets and computation, and network security. Joe is in Sigma Xi, an ACM Distinguished Scientist, and an IEEE Senior Member and ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer. He serves on various committees and the editorial boards of IEEE Network and Elsevier's Journal of Computer and Systems Sciences, and is active in the IETF.
