GRADES ARE SUBMITTED; PAPERWORK AVAILABLE! I have submitted the grades. Please stop by my office (Bell 214) to pick up your papers/exams/etc. (If I'm not in when you come by, send me email or call me to find out when I will be in. If you're away for the summer, please stop by in the Fall.)

Legally, I can no longer post the grades, even by last 4 digits of your person number, but they should be available from MyUB.

Here's how I computed your grades; the percentages were originally outlined on the syllabus. For details of my generic (3-point) grading scheme, see my webpage: "How I Grade"

  1. Attendance (20% of final grade):

There were 27 class meetings at which attendance was taken.
I decided to allow 3 unexcused absences.
I then assigned grades as follows:

    4xxboth5xx
A 24-27 i.e., if you attended at least 24 times, you got an A for attendance
    A- 22-23
    B+ 21
    B 20
    B- 18-19
    C+ 17
    C14-16 9-16
    C-12-13
    D+ 9-11
    D 5-8
    F 0-4
    2. Participation (10% of final grade): Here, I focused on your participation as measured by the peer editing sessions. There were 5, on Jan 29, Feb 24, Mar 25, Apr 8, & Apr 20. I measured your participation by your class attendance on those days. If you attended: Then your grade is: all 5 peer-ed sessions A 4 B 3 C+ 2 C- 1 D 0 F 3. Reading Journals (20% of final grade): A = "good" journal; i.e., notes and comments on most of the readings C = any journal that is not clearly A or clearly D D = journal handed in, but looks like virtually no work was done for it F = no journal handed in ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: BY DOING ALL OF THE ABOVE, BUT NONE OF WHAT FOLLOWS, THE MAXIMUM GRADE YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN WAS A "C". NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE CHOSEN THIS OPTION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Position Papers (25% of final grade): Here, I used the following "procedure" (I hesitate to call it an "algorithm" :-) drop lowest letter grade; assign ungraded papers a grade of "A"; take the average of these 4 grades. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: BY DOING ALL OF THE ABOVE, BUT NONE OF THE FOLLOWING, THE MAXIMUM GRADE YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN WAS "B"; SEVERAL OF YOU TOOK THIS OPTION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Term Paper or Final Exam (25% of final grade): If you chose not to do either of these (thus aiming for a maximum grade of "B"), I assigned you an "F" for this item (which automatically gives you a "B" if you have an "A" average on items 1-4). The term papers were graded on my 3-item grading rubric as explained on my grading webpage, as follows: A = generally excellent paper C = generally medium-quality paper D = generally poor-quality paper F = not handed in The final exams were graded as follows: Each of the 5 questions was graded on the 3-point grading rubric as follows: 0 = not done 1 = poor-quality answer; typically given for an answer that did not discuss any of the papers we read and/or that consisted primarily of quotations (not always properly attributed) with little or no evaluations/comments 2 = partial credit; usually given for an answer that was incomplete (i.e., that omitted one or more of the subquestions) 3 = full credit for a generally good answer showing that you understood and assimilated the material. This yielded a total of 15 points, with letter grades assigned as follows: 4xx both 5xx A 15 A- 14 B+ 13 B 12 B- 11 C+ 10 C 9 6-9 C- 8 D+ 6-7 D 4-5 F 0-3 The class averages (and ranges) were as follows: CSE 510 PHI 498 CSE 410 avg range avg range avg range Item (lo/hi) (lo/hi) (lo/hi) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Attendance A- (16/27) A (22/26) B+ (3/27) Participation A- (C+/A) A- (B/A) A- (F/A) Reading Journals A (F/A) A (F/A) B+ (F/A) Position Papers A (B/A) B+ (D/A) B (D/A) Term Papers B+ (C/A) C (C/C) D (D/D) Final Exams B- (D/A) B (D+/A) C- (D/B) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Course Grade A- (B-/A) B (D+/A) B- (F/A-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ William J.
