Contemporary philosophy | isn't nearly as scientific as it pretends to be. For one thing, our | pedagogy does not even consider empirical methods of determining the | success of ways to improve "critical thinking." Intuitions are widely | deployed in ethics and metaphysics, but they are intuitions only of | philosophers, whose natural philosophical inclinations have probably long | ago become distorted by exposure to various theories. Here, the small | "experimental philosophy" movement is on to something--but does not go | nearly deep enough. Contemporary philosophy has chosen what it perceives as | the conclusions of science (philosophers' Newtonian materialism) when it | should have chosen the method and spirit of science. | | Randall Dipert is Charles S. Peirce Professor of American Philosophy at the | University at Buffalo. Further information is available | http://philosophy.buffalo.edu/people/faculty/dipert/ | | CFI naturalism workshops are light on lecture and heavy on discussion and | question-and-answer; they are ideal for people who want to learn more about | the naturalistic worldview and gain insights into some of its philosophical | complexities. The Center for Inquiry [www.centerforinquiry.net] is a | research institute and public advocacy organization that defends reason, | science, secular humanism, and the naturalistic worldview.
