Adrienne and Dima can ignore it; we'll set up our own schedules. 2. For the rest of you: Please fill in the following template, indicating when you CANNOT meet. We need to find 150 minutes of meeting time, which comes out to either 3 50-minute sessions a week, or 2 75-minute sessions, or 1 2.5-hour session. Please be liberal: don't say you can't come if you merely mean that you prefer eating lunch at that time :-) Please reply as soon as you get this message! Please put Xs where *you* canNOT meet. E.g., instead of "cse 111 hw2.doc", name it "cse-111-hw2.doc" (The reason has to do with Unix file systems; most of the faculty and TAs use the Unix operating system, which cannot easily handle files with blank spaces or certain other weird characters in their names.) Using evidence from linguistic theory, this talk is aimed at | squaring the two conceptions of meaning by proposing an integrated | system of semantic interpretation which takes meanings of lexical items to | be concepts exactly of the sort (some) psychologists and linguists say they | are and mapping them into meanings of the type (some) linguists, chiefly | formal semanticists, say they are. The linguistic structures examined most | closely are "weak indefinites" found, to my knowledge, in all languages, and | object-incorporation structures found in many languages. | | | Refreshments will be served | Open to the public | | A hardcopy of this announcement can be accessed here: | http://www.cogsci.buffalo.edu/Activities/Colloquium/CLLQf04/carlsonannounce.pdf | | Please print it out and post it in your department. Here are a few speculations. My hypothesis(which I arrived at before looking at your hypothesis and the correct answer) might have been biased due to the fact that I am indeed 'blazzed' by the workload and am aware of the graduate student workload issue(these are part of my background knowledge but should they be part of the background knowledge of a person who is unaware of the graduate student workload situation). It seems to me that 'blazzed' would also make sense if it were guessed to mean something to the effect of 'having very little work to do'. This could be inferred because it is not specified whether the workload is heavy or light. But there are two "clues" that perhaps led us to infer that blazzed means 'overwhelmed [with work]'. To me, the 'load' in 'workload' indicated something 'negative' and also workload is usually used only when there is a heavy workload. Also, 'blazzed' SOUNDED like a word that would indicate something 'negative'. Regards, Rahul. One technique you can try if you're having trouble is to imagine that you meet a friend at a conference who asks you what the seminar is about and what papers you're reading. You mention one to your friend, who then asks you what the paper is about. There you are, miles from home and your paper, and you have to summarize it in a few sentences. Now do that on paper, filling in any gaps in your memory from the paper itself.
