Grades "Final" (Posted 5/15)

I have updated the gradebook with what I believe are the last changes in the grades. As far as I can tell, the grades are final. However, I encourage everyone to take a look at their grades and report any problems to me ASAP. I will not be officially submitting grades until Friday, so any problems that are discovered between now and Friday can be fixed before grades are officially submitted, so please let me know if there are any problems.

Problem of the Day Grades Posted (Posted 5/9 - 4:00pm)

The gradebook now has the information about your recitation presentation grade. The group grades ranged from 78 - 100, which were influenced by the TA evaluation of the presentation as well as the in-class surveys (I actually did read all of them). Your grade was also subject to deductions based on your return of the peer evaluation form (20 point deduction for not turning it in) as well as your attendance in recitations throughout the semester (6.25 point deduction for each recitation missed - you were allowed one missed without penalty). If you would like a more detailed breakdown of your personal grade for this component, please email me.

Problem of the Day Grades Posted (Posted 5/9)

The gradebook now has the information about your problem of the day grade. Groups were awarded basically three grades, 100 for a good presentation, 90 if the presentation was not as well organized or poorly presented, or 80 if there were more significant problems. No one did a worse job than that. If you lost points because of peer evals, you were sent an email. This score is now factored into your course average. I am working on the recitation review grades next and will be posting another announcement when those scores are updated.

Office Hours During Exam Week (Posted 4/30)

Office Hours officially ended on 4/30. None of the staff will have official office hours during exam week. If you have an issue about the course that you need to discuss, you can send an email to Adrienne detailing your concern. If an appointment is warranted, one can be arranged.

Looking for CSE Student Mentors for Fall 2007 (Posted 4/4/07)

                    CSE Mentors Needed for Fall 2007

The CSE department has a mentoring program for new majors (students
enrolled in CSE 115).

We are currently looking for enthusiastic students who possess a
desire to help new students feel at home in the department to join
the mentor program.

Students interested in applying must minimally meet the following
qualifications:
 * they must be a student at UB (extreme preference given to undergraduate students)
 * they must be in good academic standing at the University and within the department
 * they must have taken more than one semester's worth of courses at UB
   (having taken CSE 115 & 116 at UB is preferred)
 
Mentor responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  
 * Guiding a small group of CSE 115 students as they begin their
   academic careers in the CSE department
 * Organizing regular meetings with mentees
 * Attending an orientation session for mentors and mentees
 * Attending a weekly mentor meeting with a faculty mentor supervisor
 * Participating in activities of interest to beginning students,
   such as a "how to set up your laptop to work from home" workshop,
   and recruiting activities such as "Open House" and "Preview Day".

Applicants are asked to create a resume and obtain a print out of the 
"My Grades & GPA" link from MyUB in the mailbox of Carl Alphonce no later than 
Friday, April 13, 2007. You must include your UB email address on your resume.  All
materials should be submitted in hard copy.

Suitable applicants will be contacted to arrange an interview.

While this is an unpaid position, you will receive University credit
for participating in the mentor program.

Paper Tax (Posted 3/30/07)

I get new papers from the TAs every Friday, so even if you picked up papers from me on Friday morning, I might have more for you. There are currently 44 people's papers (a stack that is over 2 inches high) that I am carrying back and forth to class every day. Please come and pick up your papers.

Go to the assignments page to see about group assignments and in-class presentation assignments. Your group can sign up for a demo to Adrienne right now outside of Adrienne's office door. Evaluation criteria for the presentations has also been posted on the assignments page.

Adrienne's at SIGCSE(Posted 3/7/07)

I will be at SIGCSE from Wednesday, March 7th - Saturday, March 10th presenting a paper. I should have access to email. Please note that class will meet on Friday as scheduled. Last presentation group sign ups are due that day. The test after break will only cover section 2.4 of the text. Section 2.5 will be covered in lecture.

Hiring for CSE 115 UTAs for Fall 2007(Posted 2/20/07)

CSE 115 UTAs Needed for Fall 2007

We are now accepting applications to fill positions as paid undergraduate TAs
in CSE 115 starting in Fall 2007.

Students interested in applying must minimally meet the following
qualifications:

 * Student at UB (extreme preference given to undergraduate students)
 * In good academic standing at the University and within home department
 * Must have taken CSE 115 - 116 at UB
 * Be enrolled as a student at UB for the entire 2007 - 2008 academic year

Undergraduate TA responsiblilites include (but are not limited to):

 * Teaching recitations
 * Holding office hours
 * Hosting tutorials
 * Attending all class lectures
 * Attending weekly 115 staff meetings
 
Applicants are asked to create a resume and also to write a no more than
250 word (ie - one page double spaced) response to the following question:

    What is/are the thing(s) that you learned in CSE 115 that you
    (have used most often/found most important) as you progressed
    through the program?

You must place your resume, your response to the question above as well as
a print out of the "My Grades & GPA" link from MyUB in the mailbox of
Adrienne Decker no later than Friday, March 9, 2007. You must include
your UB email address on your resume.

Suitable applicants will be called back for an interviewing process to
determine a candidate's appropriateness for the position. Please note that
the interview process has multiple stages that will be described as you
progress.

This is a paid hourly position (more than minimum wage) and starting
salary will be determined based on the qualifications of the candidate.
