BYO [Bring Your Own] Bottle

In response to [EiF]'s suggestion below, [JoJ, 3/10] writes: "I am a long time user of your website, but have never contributed a review before. I am writing today, not to review a restaurant, but to warn you that the new BYOB section, while informative, is not beneficial to the restaurants. BYOB in NYS is illegal without a liquor license, which I'm guessing most of these establishments lack. I enjoy (and bring my own bottle) to a few of the restaurants already listed and would hate to see that information fall into the hands of someone at the SLA who wishes to enforce the letter of the law. Please, please, reconsider this new section of your (truly) terrific website."

[Because I don't know which of the restaurants that had previously been listed here do or do not have licenses, I have decided to err on the side of caution and delete all but one restaurant—which advertises "BYOW" on their website—from the list. Restaurateurs who have licenses, who wish to encourage (or not discourage?) this practice, and who would like to be listed here should contact me to be placed on this list.]

[EiF, 3/10] suggested: "Why not a BYO section? I've lived in cities around the world, and BYO restaurants are always popular and sometimes have their own following. They are sought out, because (1) the restaurant usually focuses on their food, and (2) people like to bring their own quality wine and not pay a fortune for the cheap stuff. When living in New York and in Melbourne, Australia, we always sought out BYO restaurants. As I said, the focus was totally on the food, and one could bring their own good wine without the huge restaurant markup. A friend and I get together regularly to catch up by going out to dinner. The economy has hit her particularly hard, and just recently she has suggested that we may have to discontinue our monthly ritual. I took her to two places that I remember had good food, good value, and no liquor license, and she discovered that a night out can be affordable. I love your site; thanks."

VEGAN/VEGETARIAN

[KE, 6/08] warns: "Many of the restaurants listed here under vegetarian have almost no vegetarian food to speak of. One should be especially wary of Thai, as almost everything in Thai food has fish in it. (See my comments on Jasmine, which I've since discovered is true of almost all Thai food unless a restaurant is doing something special.) Also, I would not list a restaurant that will make a vegi dish to order but has none on its menu under vegetarian (e.g., Touch). [Editor's Note: Touch has closed.] Here's what I hope you'll take as a friendly suggestion from a concerned vegetarian: Perhaps under this heading, you might consider putting Palace of Dosas first (mentioning that it is the only truly vegetarian restaurant in the area) and then listing ones that are specifically vegi-friendly (and having a sub-heading mentioning that): Amy's Place, Buffalo Bean and Leaf, Café 59, Dolci Bakery, Falafel Bar, Natalie's Pizza Plant, (As a general rule, I don't think of a restaurant as vegi-friendly at all unless they have at least two entree choices on the menu, and I would submit that they need to be seen as making a special effort to cater to vegetarians to be on this list.) Then "these other cuisines are also generally vegi-friendly": (perhaps with a special mention of Taste Good and China Max for offering mock-meat options). Thanks for a wonderful resource." Update [7/08] "I would not add Kyoto to the vegetarian section."

Bill's reply: Thanks Ken! I'm not a vegetarian, so I'm not sensitive to the subtleties of the varieties of vegetarianism. I suspect that many readers who are vegetarians are so to different degrees. The list below was simply culled from reviews that mentioned the existence of vegetarian dishes, and was never intended to be a precise guide, merely a list of pointers. So I'm grateful for your detailed analysis. Note that Jasmine was never listed here. My inclusion of Touch was intended to indicate that (some) vegetarians might not feel out of place there (according to at least one reviewer), not necessarily that (all) vegetarians would feel fully at home. The listings here, as elsewhere, are, generally speaking, alphabetical, with only an indication of those restaurants that I especially like or dislike; that's why San Marco is–but Palace of Dosas isn't—on top: I've been to San Marco (but had a non-veggie dish); I've haven't been to Palace of Dosas yet. I'm adding your later comment about Kyoto, as a warning to others :-)
