Lab 2

- - Lab 2

Introduction

This week, we are going to continue some setup tasks in the lab as well as reviewing some of the things we did in the previous lab so that next week we can come into lab and create some Java code.

Objectives

The objective of this lab is to further configure your account so that we can create programs for this class and to familiarize yourself with some more of the tools available to you while using Eclipse. You will also learn how to use the department's submission mechanism (via Unix command). Next time, we will look at a newer submission mechanism that will be available to us right through Eclipse.

Lab Tasks

Make local plug-ins available

There is a little more Eclipse setup that you will need to do in the lab to get your Eclipse install to have all the tools you will need for this semester. So, the first thing you need to do is open up Eclipse. If you don't remember how to do this, refer back to the directions in Lab 1.

The setup that you will be doing this week involves making our UML tool (Green) and the Dr. Java plugins available to our Eclipse session. To do this, go to "Help" -> "Software Updates" -> "Manage Configuration".

Manage Configuration

This will open up the "Product Configuration" window.

Product Config Before

Select "Add an Extension Location" from the right-hand window. You will see the following window:

New extension location

Click on "Filesystem" in the left-hand pane and browse to /projects/CSE115/eclipse

Once you've done this, click "OK". After you click "OK" Eclipse will ask whether to restart the workbench:

Install update

Click "Yes" to restart the workbench. When you do, your Eclipse window will disappear for a little while, then Eclipse will start up again.

To make sure you have set this up correctly, you should start up the Dr. Java Interactions pane. To do this, select Window->Open Perspective->Other... This will open the "Open Perspective" dialog window. Select "DrJava" and click "OK". If everything is installed correctly, you should have the DrJava "Interactions Pane" along the bottom of your Eclipse window, and inside the "Interactions Pane" you should see the following text:

Welcome to DrJava.
>

If you encounter problems, ask your recitation TA for help.

Using Repositories

Check out the Lab2 Skeleton from the LabSkeletons Repository. Open the file named directions.txt so that it appears in the editor. Follow the directions that are contained in that file to complete the rest of this lab.

Due dates

Since this lab should be completed in the alloted lab time, the due date for the lab is by the completion of your scheduled lab time during the week of September 8th. That is, all submitted parts of the lab need to be turned in by the end of the day (11:59:59pm), Friday, September 12th.
