Essay Assignment - Rough Draft

Now that you have a strong handle on your topic and your ideas are in place because of your outline, the time has come to write a draft of the paper.

Your rough draft should be no less than 5 pages double-spaced, but no more than 6 pages double-spaced.

Your paper should have citations back to your references, using ACM style. You must cite all of your references at least once. Direct quotes must be in quotations. Facts and other paraphrased elements do not need to be in quotes, but should have a citation back to your references. Plagairism will not be tolerated for this assignment and will result in a grade of F in CSE 115. When in doubt, cite your reference.

Your rough draft should begin with your abstract and end with your reference list, with the main text of your paper in between.

A recap of what you need to submit for this assignment. Note that the presentation and formatting of what you submit at each stage will factor into your grade. Please note the following submission requirements. The submissions MUST be typed and the submission packet MUST be stapled (or paper clipped) and the papers MUST be arranged in the following order:

  • Your rough draft. Your rough draft should be organized in the following way:
    • Page 1: Title page with the title of your paper and your name ONLY (no other information should be included on the title page)
    • Page 2: Your re-written abstract that corresponds with the paper you are handing in.
    • Pages 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, (& perhaps 8): The main body of your paper
    • Page 8 (or 9): Your updated references list
  • Your original outline with comments/grading.
  • If you have modified your outline at this stage, please include the new outline.
  • Your original abstract with comments/grading.
  • If you have modified your abstract upon completing your outline, please include the new abstract along with the old abstract at this stage.
  • Your references with comments/grading (included above if on one page).
  • If you have modified your list, include the new list of references along with your old list of references.
  • Your original essay topic with any comments that were written on it.
  • If you have re-focused your topic, you should include an addendum to your topic (i.e. your new topic) indicating the new direction your paper will be taking.

Recall that it is important to your overall essay grade to address issues with your previous stage of the essay in the subsequent stage of the essay assignment.

Due date (Modified 10/18/06)

You must hand this part of the assignment in at the beginning of lecture on Friday, October 20th (if you would like to earn the early bonus of 10 points on your rough draft score).

Otherwise, you can hand in the rough draft without penalty (and without bonus points) on Monday, October 23rd.

We will be commenting on this part of your essay and returning it back to you. It is very important that you keep your returned paper as you will need to turn it in along with the next phase of the essay assignment.

NOTE: You must hand in a rough draft in order to hand in a final draft of the essay. Failure to hand in a final draft of the essay will result in a failing essay grade and a final grade of F in CSE 115.
